Weissmann announces GOP candidacy in CD 2

Republican hopes to give Polis a run for his money

2/20/2012
THE COLORADO STATESMAN

Republican businessman Eric Weissmann’s candidacy for CD 2 against popular and well-funded Democratic incumbent Rep. Jared Polis is, by many accounts, a longshot. But recent voter registration numbers from the Colorado secretary of state show that the race — at least on paper — may be closer than originally anticipated.

Initially, when borders were finalized after redistricting last year, Democrats enjoyed a 4-point advantage over Republicans among active voters, but that lead has dwindled to just two points, according to registration numbers released in February. Read the rest of this entry »

Colorado politics on stage as DU prepares for debate

By incorporating all the aspects of a sporting event — cheerleaders, a pep band and a count-down clock — the University of Denver unveiled a presidential debate logo and website on Presidents Day while also setting the scene for Battleground Colorado as the hometown host for the first of three debates that could greatly influence undecided voters.

Colorado’s unique political character becomes even more critical as the Republican base struggles to centralize behind a candidate, and as President Barack Obama’s popularity rating rises.

“Colorado used to be considered safe for Republican candidates. Somewhere around 2004, it became a lot more competitive,” said Seth Masket, a political science professor at DU.

Cheerleaders were on hand for Monday morning’s announcement at Sidelines Pub. (Kathryn Scott Osler, The Denver Post)

won the selection for the Oct. 3 debate, and while a debate’s location may mean little to those living elsewhere, the fact that it is on Colorado soil could hold huge implications for the election’s outcome. Read the rest of this entry »

Cash Is King

By Peak News Contributor Dave Diepenbrock

When Barack Obama makes a U-turn, he’s a superb stunt driver. Obama just embraced Super PAC spending to help his re-elect. He’ll make available “senior White House advisers and campaign staff” to beg fat cats for bucks. That’s change from, “I don’t think American elections should be bankrolled by America’s most powerful interests. They should be decided by the American people.” Bring on the bankrolls, boys! Forget (euphemistically) the people.

But Obama’s fat cat connection already existed. Consider Super Bowl ads, where major Democratic donors took care of spreading Obama’s message (reviewing this Super Bowl ad rundown).

  • The ballyhooed Chrysler “It’s Halftime America” echoed Obama’s statement that he’s only halfway through ‘fixing’ the economy. The auto workers’ pension plan owns nearly half of Chrysler– and auto workers have huge political cash, 95%+ going to Democrats, $27.5 million to federal politics plus $28.1 million to state level politics (h/t opensecrets.org and followthemoney.org).
  • GE, a huge beneficiary of Obama stimulus cash, had its “manufacturing is back” ads to boost that Obama meme – and GE gave $13.8 million to Democrats. GM’s Chevy had a duo, “Looks Like We Made It” (don’t Obama hope!) and “Stunt” featuring the singer Monae doing “We Are Young.” It’s purely a coincidence that:  Read the rest of this entry »

The O’Reilly Factor Talking Points Memo on February 9, 2012

Featured on February 9, 2012

Are we losing freedom in America?
By Bill O’ReillyMillions of Americans are angry because the Obama Administration is forcing them to buy government-mandated health insurance. Also the feds want us to pay a huge amount of estate tax intruding on family legacies. And now, now freedom of religion is in question because the Obama administration is ordering religious-based non-profit institutions to cover birth control in their insurance plans.
So let’s take it step-by-step. First of all, President Obama believes in social justice. That the federal government has a duty to impose fairness in the marketplace and to redistribute income to folks who don’t have very much. That is a core belief for Barack Obama. Read the rest of this entry »

Exposing MSM Tricks on Unemployment and Presidential Polling

The White House and the media were ecstatic about Friday’s BLS unemployment report, which showed the national jobless rate dropping to 8.3 percent, as the US economy added 243,000 jobs.  These should be welcome results for all Americans, CBO’s harrowing 2012 economic projectionsnotwithstanding.  Although the headlines were uniformly positive, reality isn’t quite as cheery.  Leftist Paul Krugman notes that long-term unemployment remains historically persistent, the U-6 “real” unemployment rate still floats above 15 percent, and — most distressingly — the labor force continues to contract.  Zero Hedge documented Friday’s flat-out bad news (emphasis his):

A month ago, we joked when we said that for Obama to get the unemployment rate to negative by election time, all he has to do is to crush the labor force participation rate to about 55%. Looks like the good folks at the BLS heard us: it appears that the people not in the labor force exploded by an unprecedented record 1.2 million. No, that’s not a typo: 1.2 million people dropped out of the labor force in one month! So as the labor force increased from 153.9 million to 154.4 million, the non institutional population increased by 242.3 million meaning, those not in the labor force surged from 86.7 million to 87.9 million.Which means that the civilian labor force tumbled to a fresh 30 year low of 63.7% as the BLS is seriously planning on eliminating nearly half of the available labor pool from the unemployment calculation. GOP Presidential Candidates Ready To Descend On The Centennial State

We’re less than two weeks away from the Colorado GOP precinct caucuses. Only days ago it looked like Colorado’s caucus would be a coronation, now it’s undeniably going to be a dog fight. As Colorado GOP Chairman Ryan Call explained to Denver Westword’s Michael Roberts yesterday, due to the fluid nature of the race the primary campaigns are only now beginning to implement their plan of attack in Colorado.

Ron Paul’s campaign is the one exception. Colorado has always been a top target for them, as caucus states reward the type of fervor and organization unique to Paul’s campaign. Paul is the only candidate with a physical campaign office, as we reportedback in November. He’s placing advertising all across the interwebs and we’ve received numerous reports from readers that Paul is polling in the state.

He’s likely to improve on his 2008 showing when he received8.4% of the vote for fourth place, and only won Gilpin County — a notoriously libertarian area. To help boost his chances Paul will be campaigning in Colorado on Tuesday, January 31, per a report from an NBC reporter’s Facebook page.

Mitt Romney is set to visit the state on February 6 and 7, as Call told Denver Westword. Read the rest of this entry »

Holder’s Texas Defeat

The Supreme Court delivered a wallop to Attorney General Eric Holder yesterday on the Justice Department’s recent federal posturing on the Voting Rights Act. In its unanimous decision, the Justices also sent a warning to civil-rights groups that further reviews of the law may be on the agenda.

In Perry v. Perez, the Justices rejected a series of election maps redrawn by a lower court in Texas to replace a map created by the Texas legislature to account for population growth and four new Congressional seats. The Supreme Court noted that the lower court had “exceeded its mission” and it sent the maps back to the drawing board.

Under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, Texas is one of nine states required to get preclearance from a federal court or the Justice Department for any changes in election law. While that petition was pending, the maps drawn by lawmakers were challenged on grounds that they diluted minority voting strength. A federal court in San Antonio then drew up interim maps that differed radically from the original set, creating a scenario more favorable to Democrats.  Read the rest of this entry »
