Private sector jobs – our only salvation

President Obama said “I will not be satisfied until everyone who wants a good job that offers some security has a good job that offers security,” speaking recently at an energy-efficient lighting plant.

Whew. I feel better. And more secure. Who wouldn’t want a good job with security? After all, with job security you don’t have to work. You just have to show up. And Obama is setting the bar pretty low – you only have to want the job.

It seems like a nice sentiment, but it is neither achievable nor desirable.

There was a time when people had to work to make an effort to get and keep a job. They did that because they had needs and wants. If you needed food or shelter you got a job that would allow you to pay for food and shelter. Need a car? Get a job. Want a better car? Get a better job. Read the rest of this entry »

Unemployment insurance problems in your own backyard

Did you know that if you hire your neighbor’s kid to mow your lawn, you are liable, under Colorado law, for unemployment insurance for that kid?

The fact is you cannot sell your labor for a price you are willing to accept unless it meets government criteria. As an employee, you must receive minimum wage – and be covered by unemployment insurance, worker’s compensation insurance, and have taxes withheld. This is how our state and country disrespect individual enterprise. Let’s consider how this affects the small businesses that hire most of the people in our land: Read the rest of this entry »

In memory of Barbara Fitzgerald

Barbara Fitzgerald passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2011. Barbara was a long-time member of the Republican Trumpeteers of Adams County and is a former District II Director for the Colorado Federation of Republican Women. Barbara was an active volunteer for the Republican Party. Mary Dambman fondly remembers, “I recall her doing mailings at the 7th Congressional District Office in Jefferson County. She couldn’t do phone calls or walk, but she was there to do mailings all day for Bob Beauprez and Rick O’Donnell, and for US Senate and Presidential Candidates in 2008 and 2010. Sonny took her wherever she was needed.”
The service for Barbara will be held on Thursday, June 9, at 10:30 am. A viewing will be held prior to the service, at 9:30 am. Our President, Betty Jean Beall, will be preparing flowers for the service and would appreciate donations to cover the cost of the flowers. The announcement for the service is in today’s Denver Post.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 39 years, Clendon “Sonny” Fitzgerald, and four children. Sonny said that Barbara knew her time was coming and had time to say goodbye to family and close friends. Sonny also said that about a half hour before Barbara passed, she said she was ready to go be with her Lord.
We ask that you keep the Fitzgerald family in your prayers. Betty Jean Beall will be attending the service. If a ride is needed, please contact Betty Jean at (303) 426-7079.
